Mental Health Resources

Let’s destigmatize mental health in the medical community!

We believe deeply in the necessity for equitable and inclusive mental health resources for all people. Mental health support is an essential resource for those of us working in healthcare to process experiences of trauma, anxiety, depression, identity, and structural oppressions (and many other challenging issues that arise).  Even for those of us in the health profession, it can be really difficult to identify and connect with mental health resources and to navigate the stigma associated with seeking mental health services.

One of our hopes in building this resource guide is to build a community collective of resources and recommendations for mental health resources. Many of the therapy resources listed below offer virtual therapy so you may not need to limit yourself to a therapist in your city as long as they are licensed in the state you live in (never hurts to ask!).

Thank you to the wonderful Erin Carnahan for helping us compile these resources!

Tips for Navigating Health Insurance

If you have health insurance that will cover mental health services, you can go through the insurance website to the directory of providers (though it is not always up to date). If your health insurance offers an “insurance navigator program,” they can help with identifying providers who may be covered by your insurance plan. When you call to make an appointment, you can confirm with the therapist if they are still accepting new patients and if your insurance is accepted. In addition, it is important to confirm with your insurance company prior to your first appointment that this provider will be covered.

One other option is checking for out-of-network coverage for mental health. Some percentage of the appointment could be reimbursed by your insurance company (and may require you to send in a receipt/ bill from the therapy appointment). Finally, some insurance plans often offer some online resources, programs, or health coaching.
